You can use any mattress that is 12 inches tall or less. Use a lightweight mattress, such as a conventional inner-spring or latex foam mattress. Memory foam mattresses are incredibly heavy and are not recommended for this use. The lighter your mattress, the easier the bed will be to lift.

We eliminated the lifting mechanism that drives up the cost of a typical Murphy bed. Instead, just lift with a partner and save hundreds of dollars. The Lori Wall Bed platform "rolls" up and down along the rounded wooden "rockers" at the floor.

With the design of the bed, it will require that two able-bodied adults are present to lift and lower the bed and it's never recommended to operate alone.

The Lori Wall Bed is designed to function without an expensive lifting mechanism and, instead, be manually operated by two adults. Compared to a bed with expensive mechanical lifting aids, it's going to feel heavy. This is a piece of real wood furniture and you will be supporting the weight of one end of the platform and mattress when opening and closing the bed.

Our beds require for two able-bodied adults to be present to operate and we never recommend for anyone to operate this alone. Lifting with your legs and with good posture is also key to using the bed safely. Due to the bed's weight, we don't recommend pregnant women or children to lift the bed.

At the heaviest point (lifting off the floor), you and partner will be lifting about 60lbs plus half the weight of your mattress for a Queen/Full and about 45lbs plus half the weight of your mattress for a Twin bed.
Example: if you have a Queen mattress that weighs 100lbs on a Queen/Full bed, you and your partner will be lifting 110lbs at the heaviest point.

The Lori Wall Bed works best for a guest room, hosting those occasional friends and family members when they visit but allowing you to use your space functionally when the bed is not in use!

While The Lori Wall Bed is a great and functional solution to meeting the needs of both more space and requiring extra beds, there are a couple things to keep in mind before deciding if our beds are the right fit for your rental space.

1. Our beds are made from real wood and, therefore, are strong and sturdy and meant to last for years. Unlike other murphy beds that have expensive lifting mechanisms, our beds are designed to be manually lifted and lowered. Because it is made from real wood and there will be a mattress added, that is going to feel heavy. The Lori Wall Bed will always need to be operated with two able-bodied adults and it's never recommended to lift alone. Due to the weight of the bed, it's never recommended that pregnant woman and children operate the bed.

2. It's very important that your guests and cleaning staff understand the weight of the bed and the fact that there is not a lifting mechanism to assist them. We highly recommend, for safety reasons, to open and close the bed before your guests arrive. The use of a safety Hasp Lock with padlock on the bed is recommended, to ensure that the bed is only being opened with the owner of the property present and there to assist. We would also recommend signage for your guests and cleaning staff explaining how to safely open and close the Lori Wall Bed.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind when choosing a mattress for your Lori Wall Bed.

1. Maximum thickness of 12". Anything thicker will run the risk of the bed not closing properly into the cabinet.
2. Recommended maximum weight of 80lb for Queen and 50lb for Twin. Since you and a partner will be manually lifting and lowering this bed, be sure to keep the weight of the mattress manageable and choose one that's lightweight.
*It's required that two able-bodied adults operate the Lori Wall Bed together and it's never recommended to be operated alone.

Conventional inner spring and latex foam mattresses tend to work best in the Lori Wall Bed. Some edge support on the mattress can be helpful as well, to prevent sagging or deformation of the mattress over time.

You can use any mattress that is 12 inches tall or less and we recommending choosing a mattress that is lightweight, to ensure that the weight of the platform is manageable for two people to lift and lower.

As a part of assembly, you will put a piece of wood in place that creates an L
shape at the head of the platform. When the platform is raised to be
stowed, this shape keeps it from falling through on the edge. For the feet
area, the bed has two straps that click in place and are tightened to hold the mattress in place. These straps are stowed under the
mattress when the bed is being used.

It's important for your Lori Wall Bed to be securely anchored to the wall to prevent tipping. We never recommend using without it being properly anchored. The cabinet will be anchored to the wall and we provide the hardware necessary for most walls. We provide two hardware options, either 2.5" screws to drill into wood studs or 1/2" toggle bolts for attaching to drywall. If you have a wall made of anything other than wood studs and drywall, we recommend to consult with a contractor or your local hardware store to obtain the necessary hardware to safely anchor your bed.

We offer the option to purchase an Unfinished bed for those that would like to finish it themselves according to preference. On average, it takes our customers about 4-8 hours to sand and paint/stain their unfinished Lori Wall Bed. That time is often spread out over a few days to allow for drying time between coats.

Below are some recommendations to help with the finishing process.

To get the natural look:
You will need one gallon of semi-gloss polyurethane finish - water based

To paint in any color:
One gallon of interior water based latex paint with primer

To get the walnut look:
You will need one gallon of each product. Minwax oil based penetrating stain "Early American", followed by two coats of Minwax oil based poly. That will give you a similar look to what we offer.

We do recommend a bit of extra sanding before you paint or stain to ensure it is extra smooth before you finish your bed, although it's not necessary. If you choose to finish before your Lori Wall Bed is assembled, be sure not to cover the pilot holes that you will need during assembly.

Unfinished Lori Wall Beds are made from 100% cabinet-grade Baltic birch plywood. They are ready for any paint or stain color you would like to apply. Sanding is not required, though doing so will provide the cleanest finish.

In order to protect the wood and allow it to function well for years, finishing is important. You are welcome to do this before or after assembling the bed, depending on what works best for you.

Finish Before Assembly
Finishing beforehand can allow for a more uniform and clean finish in the end but will require more time, as you will be finishing more surface area. If you choose to finish before assembly, just be sure not to cover up the pilot holes as those are important for proper assembly and be sure that the paint or stain coats are not too thick.

Finish After Assembly
Finishing after assembly can allow for some time saved, as you are only finishing the surfaces showing. This option will likely prevent you from being able to move pieces to a work area or to be outside for that project, as the bed will be heavy once it's assembled.

No matter when you choose to stain or paint your bed, just be sure that the bed is going to work for you before doing so as you will not be able to return the bed once it has been painted or stained.
